Your computer uses an operating system, which is what makes your hardware work. It is the interface you see when you use your computer.

The operating system is there to make all of your computer components work together, it let's you install additional apps, games etc.

Without an operating system, you will not even be able to see the familiar windows, use the keyboard and the mouse, the way you are used to.

Some of the common operating systems are Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Linux, Mac OS etc.

When you turn on your computer, it goes through checks and balances, makes sure all of your hardware components work well. It is called the POST process.

It then loads the OS (Operating System) we talked about. When it is freshly installed on a new computer, it typically loads quick. Because there are not too many things in it, like apps, files and tasks.

Why Does a Computer Boot Slow?

A fresh installation of Windows typically loads fast. As the time goes by, the number of apps, tasks and files increases. It takes more and more time to load them, every time you start your system.

Besides the tasks, files and apps, there might be many other reasons why your Windows PC boots slow. Below are some of them.

  1. Your CPU is slow
  2. Not enough RAM
  3. You are using a slow spinning platter HDD (Hard-Disk Drive)
  4. You did not defragment your hard-drive (HDD)
  5. Your SSD (Solid-State Drive) is almost full
  6. You have too many startup or background apps
  7. Bloatware on your PC starts up with your apps and slows down your PC

  5. Swap your HDD with a Hybrid Drive. It gives you a lot of storage and has a small built in SSD (4GB or 8GB), which is used to store frequently used files (like boot files). It is a solid option, but a bit unpopular.
  6. Turn on Quick Boot. You will see how to do that below. This is when a snapshot of what you do (RAM) is dumped, or recorded on the hard drive. So when you power on your Widows computer, it quickly restores the RAM from the hard drive back to RAM.
  7. Turn on Hybernation. This is when your computer components are shut down and the information in the RAM is still kept. This doens't completely shut down your PC and it will still consume a little bit of power while it is "off"
